IEC 61754 interface standards define connector-family geometry and mating interfaces; they do not, by themselves, prove the optical performance or durability of a finished cable assembly. Procurement teams should use the correct family document to control interchangeability, then add optical, end-face, mechanical and environmental acceptance requirements for the delivered product.
A purchase order that says only “IEC compliant” is too vague to audit. As of October 2026, the current references include the 2026 amendment to the SC-family document, the 2024 FC-PC third edition with its 2025 corrigendum, the consolidated LC document through its 2022 amendment, and separate MPO documents for one-row and two-row interfaces. The buyer still needs to identify polish, keying, pin configuration, adapter arrangement and the finished-product test plan.

How Do You Turn an Interface Standard Into a Purchase Specification?
The interface reference controls whether components can mate. The purchase specification controls whether the resulting assembly is suitable for the link, installation and maintenance process.
Name the exact interface and variant
Write the connector family, standard part, edition, plug or adapter form and any variant identifier used on the supplier drawing. For MPO, include fibre rows and pin status. For duplex LC, include the polarity and clip arrangement.
Separate geometry from performance
Do not convert interface conformity into an unqualified “low loss” claim. State finished-assembly insertion loss, return loss where applicable, end-face condition and measurement method as separate acceptance items.
Control the mating pair
A plug and adapter are a system. Approve both sides or identify the reference adapter used for qualification. This prevents a supplier from passing a connector against a convenient internal fixture that does not represent the equipment interface.
Keep revision evidence
Attach the approved drawing, dimensional report, sample identity and change-notification rule. If an IEC amendment changes a referenced interface, the buyer can then decide whether to requalify instead of allowing an automatic undocumented substitution.
