The words male and female describe guide pins, not the adapter housing and not optical direction. Confusion grows when trunks, cassettes and transceivers use different pin conventions. A channel drawing should show each MPO face and adapter position so technicians do not solve a documentation error with an improvised component.

Draw the connector faces
Show pins, key and fibre numbering from a stated viewing direction. Text labels alone are easy to misread when the cable is turned around.
Trace the full channel
Include transceiver, jumper, adapter, trunk and cassette. The correct trunk gender can still be wrong for the complete link when a cassette changes the endpoint requirement.
Protect pins during cleaning
Use MPO tools and probe tips designed for the pinned or unpinned face. Improvised wiping can leave debris around pins or damage the fibre array.
Segregate spares
Package and label male and female spares separately. A similar shell colour is not an adequate field identification system.
